It’s battle of the boats as Tara and Anthony pair off with Patrick Norton and Michael Hand of DIY Tryin’ to see if cardboard really can hold and float two people in water.

Materials Needed:
– Cardboard
– Gorilla or Duct Tape
– Box Cutter
– Liquid Nails or Wood Glue

Experiment Tips:
– Be sure to seal all exposed holes and cracks in your cardboard boat. The less ways for water to leak in, the better!
– We found the flat-bottom boat to have better, though the wedge-shape boat was faster. – Each boat lasted ~20 minutes of hard use in the water.

The buoyancy of any object in water depends on its volume (the amount of space it takes up) and density (how much mass it has per unit of volume) compared to the density of the water. Objects with large volumes and low densities tend to be quite buoyant.

If a wooden board is placed in a bathtub full of water, some of the water will spill over the side. The amount of water pushed aside by the board is called the board’s displacement. The board sinks only until it has displaced a volume of water whose weight equals the weight of the board.
